Analytical Geochemistry
Analytical Geochemistry
In conjunction with the work taking place in the Soil Chemistry & Mineralogy and M3EGA Labs,
the ARES Analytical Geochemistry Lab permits researchers to conduct solution chemistry analyses,
including ion chromatography, pH, and electrical conductivity analyses as an integral part of
our Mars (and terrestrial) soil characterization. Ion Chromatography allows for the determination
of ppm levels of several anions (e.g., perchlorate, sulfate, chloride) simultaneously in aqueous
solutions. Glove boxes available in the lab permit to perform experiments under anoxic conditions
and at different humidity levels.

Inside the Analytical Geochemistry Laboratory: NASA scientist Kellye Pando uses
a glove box to synthesize clay minerals and iron oxides as analog processes similar to
the minerals discovered by the Mars Curiosity rover mission.
