Planetary Evolution Astrobiology Mars Soil Genesis
Project

The Astromaterials Research Office is responsible for conducting fundamental, peer-reviewed research on astromaterials (meteorites, cosmic dust, solar wind, lunar rocks) leading to an understanding of the origin, evolution, and composition of the solar system and the search for indicators of primitive biological activity through the study of astrobiology. The fundamental research in planetary materials performed within this organization utilizes state-of-the-art analytical and experimental facilities. The laboratories can measure the ages and physical properties of planetary materials and experimentally duplicate the temperatures and pressures of planetary interiors and the cratering processes that dominate planetary surfaces. Recent investments have made ARES a unique national facility for high spatial resolution studies of astromaterials. ARES scientists participate in robotic planetary missions as scientific investigators, members of science working groups, and mission scientists.
