Claude, a member of the Human Exploration Science Office, currently works on the Orion Project where he provides engineering support for the structural analysis of the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle. His area of concentration includes structural analysis of the splashdown of the MPCV in the ocean and mission abort land landings. His interests include fluid structure interaction, dynamic stress analysis, constitutive modeling of materials, and finite element model validation. Claude has expertise in the used of various finite element analysis software including Abacus, MSC NASTRAN, LS-DYNA, Mechanica, and Patran.
Claude came to the Johnson Space Center in support of return to flight in 2003. He was responsible for developing a failure model for the Shuttle Orbiter reinforced carbon carbon wing leading edge. His models were successful in predicting damage caused by foam impacts such as the type that caused the Columbia Accident. In 2006, Claude received the Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal for his work on the shuttle wing leading edge. He has also contributed to the development of ISS debris shielding using the hydrocode CTH and Autodyn.
