Programs and information is available for educators that combine exciting activities with the exploration and space science behind them. The content and hands-on activities reflect the research, missions, exploration, and curation projects of Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES).
The Space Science Thematic Activity Page section provides information packages and activities arranged in themes to enhance classroom use. Some of the thematic topics include: moon, meteorites, Mars exploration, astrobiology and general solar system. A team of scientists and educators developed the activities to help students get excited about space science. The Desert RATS provides Teachers and students with exciting projects through the field science experience conducted during Desert Research and Technology Studies (RATS) as the engineers and scientists simulated exploration of an asteroid.
The Lunar and Meteorite Sample Disk program provides K-12 teachers with samples of either Moon rocks or Meteorites to use in their classrooms. The samples, contained in acrylic, provide a link to the current research and exploration. This is one of the two education sample programs managed by the Astromaterials Acquisition and Curation office at NASA Johnson Space Center. (Link to loan process) The other program allows colleges and universities with a curriculum in the geosciences to borrow sets of 12 polished thin sections of samples from either the Lunar or Meteorite collections. Expedition Earth and Beyond is a participatory science investigation program utilizing images of Earth and other planetary bodies. Using images of Earth taken by astronauts and images of other planetary objects sent to Earth by robotic missions helps students to gain an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related subjects.
NASA Space Science Days shares the story, the science, and the adventure of the NASA's scientific exploration of our home planet, the solar system, and the universe beyond with communities of underrepresented populations at universities and with K-12 students and their parents.
