DR. ALAN BRANDON
commonly known as 'Al', is a scientist in the Astromaterials Research Office at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). His present research is on planetary materials directed at gaining a better understanding of processes that occurred in the solar nebula, and the earliest differentiation histories and chemical evolution of terrestrial bodies. He also applies petrological and geochemical data to constraining the origin of terrestrial peridotites and magmatic rocks in relation to mantle dynamics, large-scale tectonic processes, and geochemical cycles. His analytical expertise includes the precise measurement of isotopes using thermal ionization mass spectrometry, and the measurement of trace elements and sulfur isotopes using secondary ionization mass spectrometry.
Al obtained a BS in Geology at Oregon State University in 1983, an MS from University of Oregon in l987, and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in l992. He had a series of post-doctoral positions through the l990's at MIT, Carnegie Institution of Washington - Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, and University of Maryland. In 1999, he became an assistant professor at Northwestern University, before coming to JSC in late 2001. Al is presently an Associate Editor for Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, and in charge of the Os isotope geochemistry laboratory at JSC.
